Cortland Women Survive Cold Ending to Defeat Potsdam, 69-57

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) scored a career-high 23 points and added a team-high eight rebounds as Cortland opened SUNYAC play with a 69-57 win over visiting Potsdam.

Cohen hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 free throws in addition to dishing out three assists. for the Red Dragons (5-2, 1-0 SUNYAC). Junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Seniors Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) and Grace Williamson (Olean) each registered nine points and five rebounds. Junior Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) led the team with five assists.

Potsdam (2-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) was led by Jessica Kouzan's (Webster/Webster Schroeder) 18 points. She made three of her five 3-pointers and also grabbed eight rebounds. Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake) finished with 11 points and Bailey Weigel (East Amherst/Williamsville East) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster/Webster Thomas) and Weigel recorded five and four assists, respectively.

Cortland went on a 13-0 run in the first half, led by six points from Cohen, to turn a 17-14 lead at the 11-minute mark into a 30-14 advantage with six minutes left. The Red Dragons led by as many as 19 points in the first half and were up 42-24 at halftime.

The lead grew to 26 points with 16:44 remaining and was still at 21 points with 11:11 left at 60-39 after a Wolstenholme layup. The Bears, however, held Cortland scoreless for the next nine minutes and eventually got as close as six points at 60-54 after a Reynolds 3-pointer with 2:29 on the clock.

Junior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) broke the Cortland scoreless drought with two foul shots at the 2:08 mark to make the lead eight. All of the Red Dragons remaining points also came from the charity stripe. Minor hit one shot with 1:53 left and two more with 1:38 remaining to push the lead to 11. Touhey hit 3-of-4 free throws in the last minute and Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) made one shot with 33 seconds left.

Cortland will host Plattsburgh on Saturday at 2 p.m.
