Hartwick Routs Sage to Close Semester 6-1

            ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick started the game on a 22-2 run and outscored visiting Sage 49-10 in the second half in an 84-33 home victory at Lambros Arena Thursday night. The 51-point win marks the largest margin of victory for the Hawks since a 98-36 win over Manhattanville to start the 1990-91 season. With the victory, the Hawks become just the seventh team in program history to start a season 6-1 or better.
            Hartwick, which shot a blistering 58.2% (32-for-55) from the floor and 61.9% (13-of-21) from three-point range on the night, received 17 points apiece from both Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) and Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow). Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) made all five of her three-point attempts and finished with 15 points.
            Thirteen Hawks would figure into the scoring column in the contest. Hartwick would also earn a season-best 15 steals with eleven players recording at least one.
            The Hawks would hold the Gators to just three baskets in the second half (13.6%). Sage would shoot 23.5% (12-for-51) for the game. Hartwick also dominated inside as it out-rebounded its opponent 40-22, and the Hawks' defense forced a season-high 28 turnovers, which it would convert into 37 points.
            The game could not have started any better for the Hawks as they made six of their first seven shots, including a trio of three-pointers, and dashed out to a 15-0 lead on Sage in just 3:13 of action. Forward Carlee Hirt finally got the Gators on the scoreboard at 16:10, but another seven-point spurt would hand the Hawks a 20-point, 22-2 lead after seven and a half minutes.
            Sage fought back however, as it went on a 17-6 surge over the next eight minutes to cut the Hawks' lead to nine points, 28-19. 'Wick got the next five points before two straight Gator buckets made the count 35-23 Hartwick at the break.
            The opening eight minutes of the second half was a three-point clinic as the Hawks made 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc to open up a 28-point advantage, 59-31, with 12:07 remaining. Dumas hit three of the triples with Foglia adding two and Purcell netting one in the span.
            Sage would hit a big cold streak on the offensive end in the second half as it went without a point for a 12-minute span. The Gators would miss 13 straight shots and turn the ball over nine times while the Hawks outscored them 29-0 in the timeframe. Frankie Pearson ended the drought with a pair from the free-throw line with 41 seconds left to end the night's scoring.
            Foglia would make 6-of-9 shots and she also connected on all three of her three-point attempts in the game for 'Wick. She also dished out a game-high six assists. Dumas made seven of her 13 shots and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds and Purcell finished 5-of-6 from the floor with four assists.
            Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) picked up her first points in a Hartwick uniform. She made a three-pointer and converted a layup to finish with five points.  Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) also had five points with Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names), Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith), Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby), and Alicia Razanousky (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) each scoring four.   
            Hirt and Jaedell Quinn led Sage with nine points apiece. Hirt also secured a team-best six rebounds.
            The Hawks improve to 26-6 all-time against Sage. 'Wick is 22-1 in the last 23 meetings between the two clubs.
            'Wick is off until December 30 when it hosts nationally ranked Tufts University at Lambros Arena beginning at 1 p.m.
