Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team won its Capital Athletic Conference opener with a 52-40 victory over visiting Wesley on Wednesday night. The Saints improve to 4-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play.
Daja Belt led the Saints with a career-high 12 points while Katelyn Fischer and Samantha Kane chipped in nine each. Fischer also posted an impressive all-around game, adding eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals in the win.
Despite never holding the lead at any point in the game, Wesley (0-5, 0-2 CAC) kept things close in the opening half. An Aileen Maknati layup at the 10:19 mark gave the Saints their largest lead of the frame with an eight-point advantage up 12-4. The Wolverines would battle the rest of the half, pulling within one point at 18-17 with 1:47 to play before MU eventually took a 22-17 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Blue and White looked to put things away early. Marymount jumped out to another eight-point lead less than three minutes into the half before Wesley kept things interesting and cut the deficit to 30-28 at the 14:51 mark.
The Saints took it from there by putting together an 11-0 run over the next seven minutes to take their first double-digit lead, one they wouldn't fall below the rest of the way. Marymount would eventually lead by as many as 16 down the stretch before claiming the 52-40 victory.
Roniece Williams led Wesley with 10 points.
