NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team found just the right formula for breaking into the win column this season: The Hawks broke out to a 15-0 lead over host Mount Saint Mary College and took a 22-point lead into halftime, en route to a 69-47 win over the Knights last night in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the Kaplan Center.
For all intents and purposes, the Hawks earned their first win of the 2013-14 campaign by halftime, leading 36-14. New Paltz dominated all facets of the first half, most notably holding Mount Saint Mary College to 18 percent shooting from the field. The Hawks were focused and on-point, holding a commanding 13-2 advantage in bench points, while forcing 13 turnovers that led to 15 points and outscoring the Knights 8-1 in second chance points.
The victory sends New Paltz into the holiday break at 1-4, while Mount Saint Mary drops to 0-5. The Hawks will next host Western Connecticut State at the Hawk Center on Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. The Knights travel to the College of Staten Island for a 7 pm game on Dec. 3.
In the opening stanza, eight different Hawk players contributed offensively, and in an opening 17-2 spurt at the mid-point of the first half, seven different student-athletes scored. Senior forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led the way with eight points on perfect shooting (3-for-3 field goals, 2-for-2 free throws). Freshman forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) earned all seven of her rebounds in the opening 20 minutes and Scott added six of her eight boards for a New Paltz team that outrebounded the Mount 58-37 in the game.
In the first 8:59 of the second half, the Hawks used a 16-5 run that was punctuated by a three-pointer by junior guard Shannan Walker (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) to build a hefty 52-19 lead. Scott, sophomore guard Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial), sophomore guard Christine Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Valley Stream) and sophomore forward Ana Morel (New York City, N.Y./IN-Tech Academy 368) all contributed baskets to the scoring punch.
Following two free throws by Morel with 6:35 to play, New Paltz led 65-31, it's largest lead of the game, making a MSMC comeback a difficult proposition. The Knights would score 11 of the game's final 13 points to come within 69-47.
A balanced scoring attack saw three New Paltz players score in double figures, led by Rivera with 11, Walker and Scott with 10 each. Scott and Morel each pulled down eight rebounds. Walker and Irby contributed seven boards. Walker had five assists.
