MANCHESTER, IN - The Calvin women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-55 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night. The win lifts Calvin's season record to 3-2.
Calvin held a 39-31 halftime lead and used a 12-5 run over the final three minutes of regulation to seal the win.
Calvin led throughout the second half with Manchester closing to within two points on one occasion and then with three points at 53-50 late in the contest before the Knights pulled away for the win.
Junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 points including three baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Maria DeKuiper had 13 points while junior Hannah Acre had 11 points. Junior Kayla Engelhard added 10 points to round out a balanced Calvin scoring attack. Sophomore Abby Springer also chipped in with eight points including a pair of three-pointers.
Manchester (1-3) was led in scoring by Alyssa Hammond with 11 points.
"It was a good road win for our team," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "This was our fifth game in 11 days so we are running a little ragged right now but I was proud of our effort."
Calvin shot 44.9 percent overall from the field and connected on 15-of-17 attempts from the free throw line for an 88.2 percent clip.
Calvin will now break until December 4 when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
