Monks Hold Off Mariners

CASTINE, Maine -- Saint Joseph's held Maine Maritime at bay, with a 10-4 scoring run in the final four minutes, to secure a 62-51 win over the Mariners in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Monks improved to 3-1, while Maine Maritime dropped to 2-2.

Morgan Cahill recorded a double-double with game-highs in points (20) and rebounds (12) for St. Joseph's. She added seven blocks and three assists. Lindsay Moore tallied 14 points for the Monks and Abby Young added 12. Mackenzie Dufour dished out a game-high eight assists.

Ashley Shine paced the Mariners with 16 points and Bekah Campbell added 10. Leah Jackson had a solid line of seven rebounds, seven points, nine assists and five steals for Maine Maritime.

Trailing by seven, 9-2, after Young's trey at 14:36, the Mariners responded with a 12-6 scoring run to lead 14-13 with 9:23 left in the first. Jackson scored four points in the run, Shine three, Kristi Willey three and Jillian Perron two.

The first half featured three more ties and was evened for a final time with Shine hit a layup with five minutes left. The Monks used a 15-6 run in final five minutes to lead 34-25 at halftime.

The Mariners got as close as three, 44-41, in a Hannah Lyons layup with 12:18 left in the game and would get within four, two times in the second half.  Campbell's layup at 8:50 made it 47-43 and another outback by Campbell made it 49-45.

A three by Dufour with 4:34 left in the game started a 10-4 scoring run to finish the game.
