RALEIGH, NC – Two tournaments up, two tournaments down for the Hartwick women's basketball team. On Saturday, the Hawks defeated Emory & Henry College (1-1) 63-45 to claim the championship of the William Peace University Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament at the Hermann Student Center in Raleigh, NC. With the victory, the Hawks remain unbeaten and begin the season 4-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) was named the Most Valuable Player. She registered game-highs in both points and rebounds on both days of the tournament. Tonight she scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She would average a double-double of 16.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in the two contests.
Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) was selected to the All-Tournament Team. She scored 12 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) chipped in 14 points, including four three-pointers. She also had four assists.
The lead would change hands on five different occasions on the night. The score was also tied seven different times.
The Hawks would trail the Wasps by as many as eight points in the first half of play. A Tracey Koch (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem) basket with 13:28 left made the score 10-10 but a 10-2 Emory and Henry run handed the Wasps a 20-12 advantage less than six minutes later.
Three-pointers from Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) and Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) would cut into the deficit to keep 'Wick close. A E&H free throw made the score 25-20 with less than five minutes left but a Veit driving basket, two Foglia free throws, and a Dumas three-pointer lifted the Hawks to their first lead in over 14 minutes, 27-25.
The Wasps would tally the final four points of the half to take a 29-27 lead at the break. Emory and Henry shot 47.6% (10-for-21) in the first 20 minutes while 'Wick made 34.6% (9-for-26) of its shots.
E&H briefly had a three-point edge but Purcell drilled a three-pointer to tie it and neither team led by more than two points for the next five minutes in a back and forth game. A 9-0 Hartwick run, however, would put the Hawks up for good. A Dumas basket, followed by two Foglia free throws, an Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) triple, and two from the charity stripe from Veit would account for the 'Wick points.
The Wasps trimmed the deficit to six points, 46-40, following a three-pointer but another big 9-1 spurt would all but put the game away. Purcell hit a big three to make the margin nine. Dumas then scored a bucket, was fouled, and hit the subsequent free throw to extend it to 12 and Purcell hit her third trey of the game for a 14-point edge with less than four minutes to play.
Twelve points was as close as Emory and Henry would get. Foglia would add her seventh and eighth free throw of the game down the stretch. Purcell added her fourth three, and Stone finished off the scoring with a layup with 26 ticks remaining.
The Hawks finished the game hitting 42.6% (20-for-47) and eight three-pointers. They also made 13-of-18 from the free-throw line.
The Hartwick Hawks look to stay unbeaten on Tuesday night when they travel to Schenectady, NY for a game against Union at 6 p.m.
