Babson Falls To 15th-Ranked Williams, 61-42, In Season Opener

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—Junior Kellie Macdonald (Danvers, Mass.) poured in a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, helping 15th-ranked Williams College open its season with a 61-42 victory over visiting Babson College on Saturday afternoon at the Williams Tip-Off Tournament.

Junior Ellen Cook (Eugene, Ore.) had nine points for the Ephs while sophomore Jane Thompson (New Milford, Conn.) and first-year Devon Caveney (Andover, Mass.) chipped in with seven apiece.

Junior Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass. ) led the Beavers with 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Briana Hunt (Newton, Mass.) had nine points, five boards and three assists in the loss.

Babson jumped to a quick 7-2 lead thanks to hoops from sophomore Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) and Roche, sandwiched around a pair of free throws from Hunt. Williams responded with a 13-0 run, highlighted by four points from Cook, to jump ahead 15-7 with 13:08 left in the first half.

The Beavers trailed 21-13 following a layup from sophomore Megan Otto (Scituate, Mass.) at the 9:55 mark, but connected on just two more field goals in the opening stanza, and trailed 33-20 at halftime.

The Ephs put the game away with an 11-0 spurt over the first 4:28 of the second half, as Thompson netted all seven of her points and Macdonald finished a pair of hoops in the paint to go ahead 44-20. The Green and White would close within 17 later in the period, but shot just 25 percent (15-for-33) for the game.

Williams shot 39 percent (26-for-67) from the floor, led by an 8-for-13 effort from Macdonald, who also knocked down a pair of three-pointers. The Ephs also collected 16 offensive rebounds and held a 48-33 edge on the glass.

Both teams will be back in action on Sunday as Babson will face Wesleyan University at 11:30 a.m., while Williams will host Plattsburgh State at 1:30 p.m.
