After Friday's loss to St. Benedict, the Yellowjacket women's basketball team had a quick turnaround in front of them, coming right back on Saturday afternoon to take on Macalester College in their second game of the Quinlivan and Hughes Tip-Off Tournament at the College of St. Benedict.

And the quick turnaround agreed with them. The Yellowjackets pulled away from the Scots in the second half and rolled to their first win of the season, 61-40.

The Yellowjackets took an eight point lead just over four minutes into the contest as Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) hit a three to make the score 10-2. The Scots pulled closer and eventually took their first lead of the game with 9:26 to go in the first half. Trailing by one, Erin Murphy drained a pair of free throws to give Macalester the 13-12 edge.

Macalester held the lead until the Yellowjackets tied it and then pulled ahead on a three by Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders). A three from Brynn Liljander (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) made the lead five with five minutes to play in the half. Less than a minute later Liljander hit another lead to extend the lead further, but Macalester would close the gap and the Yellowjacket lead was at six, 31-25 at the half.

The second half was all Yellowjackets, as they doubled-up on the Scots to blow the game open.

Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) started the half with a three to push the lead to nine, and Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) hit a jumper to give the Yellowjackets a double digit lead for the first time in the game.

The Yellowjackets went on an 11-2 run to start the second half and led by 19 midway through the period. Macalester again tried to claw its way back into the contest, going on an 8-0 run to shave the deficit to 11. The Yellowjackets continued to pour on the offense, however. Linzmeier completed a three-point play and the lead bulged to 20. The lead dropped back down to 17, but Jayme Malnory (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to make the final margin of victory 21.

Linzmeier led the Yellowjackets with 20 points in the game, while Vavra chipped in 11. They were the two Yellowjackets in double figures. Liljander and Skalmoski scored nine and seven points, respectively. Skalmoski led the Yellowjackets with seven rebounds, while Linzmeier, Vavra and Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) each had six boards.

All-Tournament Team: Linzmeier, who led the Yellowjackets in scoring both games, was named to the all-tournament team. Linzmeier scored 38 points, pulled down 19 rebounds and had one assist, three blocks and eight steals in the two games.

The Yellowjackets (1-1, 0-0 WIAC) return to action on Tuesday, November 19 when they will take on the University of Minnesota Duluth at Romano Gym. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
