Trinity Women's Basketball Beaten By Wheaton In Tip-Off Finals

Norton, Mass. – Wheaton College junior forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah) led all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds and four steals to guide the Lyons past the visiting Trinity College Bantams, 75-59, in the championship game of the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Women's Basketball Tournament this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium. Trinity is 1-1 and Wheaton is 2-0.

Trinity senior forward Taylor Murtaugh (New York, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 16 points with four rebounds. Classmate Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.) collected 11 points and nine rebounds and senior Moriah Sweeney (Ramsey, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points. Sophomore guard Rebecca Arnone (Litchfield, N.H.) contributed 14 points for the Lyons.

Wheaton led from the opening tip-off jumping out to a 6-0 run lead and never looking back. Brickley scored back-to-back buckets to get the offense rolling and Shoemaker followed with a layup of her own before Murtaugh put the Bantams on the board at 17:53 with a jumper. Trinity cut its deficit within one possession on three separate occasions over the next 6:33 of action as Hanniford made it a 14-12 game at the 11:20 mark with a jump shot on the fast break. The Lyons responded with a 26-19 run to close out the half receiving contributions from seven different student-athletes down the stretch. Wheaton extended its lead to double digits early in the second half. Sweeney, who had 17 points in yesterday's first-round win over Rensselaer, represented Trinity on the all-tournament team.
