Bowdoin Defeats Salem State in Tip-Off Tournament Championship

Salem, Mass. -- Marle Curle (Plattsurgh, NY) scored 19 points and Megan Phelps (Southwest Harbor, ME) added 16 as the Bowdoin Polar Bears defeated the Salem State Vikings 81-49 in the championship game of the Salem State Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament.

Trailing early in the game, Curle put Bowdoin up 11-9 after a free throw and made basket. Rachael Carter (Merrimack, NH) tied the game at 13-13 for Salem State, but a 13-7 run to close the half, highlighted by six points from Shannon Brady (Scituate, MA) put he Polar Bears up 26-20 at the half.

Phelps opened the second half with a trey, as Bowdoin (2-0) exploded with a 14-3 run during the first three minutes. Curle, and Kirsten Prue (Auburn, ME) also hit three's as Bowdoin went 8-for-12 from behind the arc in the second half. Back-to-back three's by Curl increased the lead to 52-28, and the Polar Bears crusied the rest of the way, taking advantage of 24 Salem State turnovers, and limiting the Vikings to 9-of-31(29%) shooting.

Curle was the Tournamnet MVP, finishing with six rebounds and three assists, while going 7-of-12 from three-point range. Phelps earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as well, hitting six three pointers on nine attempts while grabbing nine rebounds. Sara Binkhorst (West Hartford, CT) added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Brady contributed 10 points and eight boards.

Carter made the All-Tournament team for Salem State (1-1) with an 18-point, seven rebound effort. Ashley White was the only other scorer in double figures for the Vikings, finishing with 12 points and five assists.
