Blue Devils open season with blowout win

ST. PAUL, Minn (November 15, 2013) - Talk about your balanced scoring. Nine different players contributed to an 18-0 run midway through the first half to give UW-Stout control of the game on their way to a season opening 78-50 win over North Central (Minn) University, Friday at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, Tip Off Tournament.

It took a little while for the Blue Devils to get going, but once they did it was full speed ahead and all hands on deck on their way to the 28 point win.

Stout held a slim two point lead at the 13 minute mark, but went on a 9-0 run to take a nine point, 18-9, lead three minutes later.

The Rams hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six, but Stout answered back with the next 18 points as nine different players - Tara Matter (Fr, Spencer), Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer), Shelby Sterba (Jr, Tony), Sami Schoeder (Sr, Durand), Sara Bedford (Fr, Chippewa Falls), Brea Boomer (Jr, Grand Portage, Minn), Rachel Hanley (Sr, Minong), Katie Nickles (Jr, Braham, Minn) and Nicki Alexander (Jr, Wabasha, Minn) - each scored two points in the run.

Schoeder and Bedford led all scorers with 10 points each. Hebert finished with nine points and Boomer seven. Stout shot 41 percent from the floor (34-83) and held North Central to 27.4 percent (17-62).

The Blue Devil dominated the rebound game as well, holding a 66-38 margin off the glass. Sterba and Alexander each had seven rebounds. Schoeder collected si and Hebert 5.

Stout will play host Northwestern, Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
