Late 9-0 surge lifts Tommies

Sophomore Jenna Dockter swished a 3-point basket with :09 to go, capping a game-closing 9-0 run, to lead unranked St. Thomas to a 64-62 win over No. 4-ranked Calvin in Friday's first-round NCAA women's basketball playoff game in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Calvin (23-4), which missed a potential tying shot in the closing seconds, was held scoreless over the final 2:07.

The Tommies (23-5), who won their 10th in a row, advance to Saturday's 7 p.m. game against Cornell, which topped St. Scholastica 76-54. St. Thomas improved to 10-1 in postseason games over the last two seasons.

Taylor Young scored 19 points, including five in the game-closing 9-0 run. Dockter had 15 points and Kellie Ring added 10 points and five rebounds. Kelly Brandenburg played 39 minutes and chipped in eight points and nine rebounds. UST shot 54 percent in the second half and 46 on the game, and had only 12 turnovers.

A 9-0 Calvin run built a 62-55 lead with 2:07 to go. Young's 3-pointer started the Tommies' comeback. Dockter had made just 13 3-pointers this season before drilling the go-ahead basket with nine seconds left.

UST avenged a 78-72 season-opening defeat to the Knights.

St. Thomas overcame a 23-point, 12-rebound game by Calvin standout Carissa Verkaik as well as the Knights' 36-26 rebounding edge and 31-6 margin in bench points.
