FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- The 18th-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport opened a 16-point halftime lead, and cruised to a 68-41 win over Greensboro. The victory Friday afternoon at Crown Center Arena advances CNU to the semi-finals. Christopher Newport will play either Maryville or LaGrange Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Junior Tia Perry paced a balanced CNU attack with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kelly Halverson and freshman Brandi Holland both scored 11 points for CNU, while junior Camry Green scored nine points and posted 15 rebounds and junior Nicole Mitchell also scored nine points with 11 rebounds.

"I was pleased with our balance and especially with our defense," Head Coach Bill Broderick said following the triumph. "We held the Player of the Year in our conference (Bianca Richburg) to just 12 points on five of 19 shooting...that's impressive."

The win for the Captains was the squad's 11th straight, and CNU improved to 24-2 overall. It was the third time in as many meetings this year the Captains have beaten the Pride.

CNU's defense held Greensboro to just 22 percent shooting for the game (15 of 67). The Captains shot 42 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Pride, 47-44.

Christopher Newport never trailed in the game and opened a 9-0 lead at the outset of the contest. The Captains were on top, 31-15, at halftime and out-scored the Pride in the second half, 37-26.

CNU will play Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the semi-finals at Crown Center Arena.
