Tommies use late surge to edge St. Mary's

Jenna Dockter scored 19 points and hit two baskets to start a decisive 12-0 run as No. 2-seed St. Thomas (21-5) scored a 69-60 win over No. 3-seed St. Mary's (22-5) in MIAC women's basketball playoff action Thursday night at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies ran their winning streak to eight and improved their home court record to 27-1 over the last two seasons.

UST advances to the playoff finals for the fourth consecutive season and will travel to play top-seed Concordia-Moorhead in Saturday's 3 p.m. finals.

Jamie Stefely had 17 points and Jessica Thone scored 12 for the Cards, who had won 14 of their previous 15 games.

St. Thomas shot 49 percent from the floor. Anna Smith had 14 points and nine rebounds, Kellie Ring had 11 points and five assists, and Taylor Young chipped in nine points, five rebounds and four blocks. UST sank 15-of-24 at the foul line to SMU's 6-for-6.

The Cardinals never led but pulled within 57-56 with 3:42 left on Thone's layup. But Dockter made two layups and four other players each made two free throws as the Toms built a 69-56 lead with 1:01 to play.
