STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team had its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to the College of Staten Island, 72-52, in the Quarterfinals of the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference/ConEdison Championships. The #6 seed Lightning end the season at 5-21.

The win by Staten Island breaks a three-game losing streak to the Lightning in the CUNYAC/Con Edison Championships.

CSI, the number three seed, now advances to face the two seed, Brooklyn College, on Wednesday night, February 20, at 8:00 p.m. The Semifinal game will be played at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium. Brooklyn defeated #7 CCNY, 71-21, earlier on Saturday.

Staten Island (16-10) exploded out of the gate, building a 16-5 lead, behind a 12-0 run. The Dolphins would later extend that lead to 22-7, marking CSI's largest lead of the first half, 15 points, at the 8:33 mark. Lehman turned the ball over quite a bit early, allowing for extra opportunities for CSI.

Then, Coach Eric Harrison's team found its groove. A 9-0 run for Lehman over a six minute span closed the gap, to make it 22-11, before freshman Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made her first three pointer of the game, bringing the score to 22-14. Navarro then made a pair of free throws, and the Dolphin lead was down to six points, at 22-16.

After a CSI free throw, junior Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) responded with a basket, and the Lightning were off again. This time, Lehman's run allowed the Lightning to capture the lead at 25-23, when Navarro drained another three pointer.

In all, the Lightning went on an 18-1 run. The Dolphins then responded, scoring the last six points of the half, to take a 29-25 at the intermission.

In the second half, junior Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Center) had several possessions where her offensive rebounding was huge. Once she scored on a put back, then, she kicked it out to a wide-open Navarro who knocked down a three-pointer. However, foul trouble plagued her, as she picked up her fourth foul early in the second half, with 16:15 left to play, sending her to the bench.

CSI went on a run, taking a 42-32 lead, before Powell sparked the Lightning with back-to back jumpers, netting five unanswered points, to cut the Dolphin lead back to five. Powell scored the next basket on a jumper, and the lead was down to just three points, sparking a Staten Island timeout, with 13:10 to play in regulation.

Later in the half, CSI built an eight point lead at 50-44, before Navarro's layup was good, and with ten minutes to play, the lead was only six points. CSI continued to run their offense inside, and extended their lead to eight points. On the afternoon, CSI scored 34 points in the paint.

The clock started to become a sixth opponent. As time ran down, the Lightning continued to battle, and trailed by 11, 58-47, with 6:40 remaining. With the score 60-47, Harrison had seen enough, and called a timeout, with 5:20 on the clock. Lehman struggled to get shots off, turning the ball over on back-to-back possessions, leading to a 64-47 lead for the hosts.

Senior Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) responded with a traditional three-point play at the 3:30 mark. However, the lead was insurmountable, and the Dolphins prevailed.

For the game, Lehman's ball control was an issue, as 30 turnovers led directly to 33 points for CSI.

The offensive tandem of Powell and Navarro, who normally combine for nearly 38 points per game, struggled mightily early in the game, with Powell not making her first basket until the 14:33 mark, and Navarro the 5:28 mark. Powell finished the game with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Navarro had 15 points. Castro-Lopez added seven points, in her final game for the Blue and Gold.
