Women's Basketball Ends Season with 88-70 Loss to Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's basketball team wrapped up its 2012-13 campaign with a loss at the hands of the Misericordia Cougars on Saturday afternoon, falling by the score of 88-70.
 
In the game senior Taylor Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) picked up a team-high 25 points to move her up four positions to sixth on the all-time scoring list at Manhattanville with 1,213 career points. Sophomore Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y/St. Saviour) picked up her 20th double-double of the season with 14 points and 22 boards on the game.
 
Misericordia jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Wilson kissed a layup off the glass to cut the lead to three.  The Cougars continued to pile on with three straight baskets to increase the lead to 11-2. After a pair of timeouts, Caiazzo sank back-to-back spin-around jumpers with the assists from classmate Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) to pull back within five.
 
Manhattanville continued to keep the lead close through the early portion of the first half as freshman Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) hit a runner from the wing, followed by classmate Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) getting around her defender and draining layup and the ensuing and-one free throw to keep the lead at five at 16-11.
 
Wilson went on a brief run as she scored six straight for Manhattanville including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to keep the Valiants within five points.
 
It didn't last long as the Cougars went on a 7-0 spurt and a 9-1 overall run, the lone point for the Valiants came from Franklin at the free throw line. Franklin scored six of Manhattanville's last eight points of the half as the Valiants went into the locker room trailing 43-27.
 
In the second half, Wilson got things started with a three-pointer from the left corner to pull Manhattanville within 13. The Valiants got within 10 at the 18:33 mark when sophomore Shayna Robinson (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) hit a runner in the lane off the glass.
 
The Cougars rattled off a 15-5 run and eventually ballooned the lead up to 23 with 9:56 to go in the contest. Caiazzo had a highlight-reel spin move off pass from Wilson to pull Manhattanville back within 71-52. Wilson and Caiazzo scored 11 of the Valiants next 12 points and pulled within 15 at 79-64.
 
With 1:10 to go, Wilson hit both ends of her free throws and was pulled from the game to finish the contest with 25 on the afternoon. The final horn sounded to end the 2012-13 season and send Manhattanville to the offseason with a loss.
 
As a team Manhattanville shot 39.4% from the floor, while Misericordia had an impressive 46.8% from the field. Another difference in the game was steals as the Cougars had 14 swipes to the Valiants' five. The Cougars also did a better job passing the ball with 24 assists to Manhattanville's 14.
 
Manhattanville wraps up the season with a 10-14 overall record, with a 3-11 mark in league play. Misericordia also missed the Freedom Conference Tournament with a 12-13 record while going 6-8 in the conference.
