Herons remaining in playoff hunt with 60-48 win over Knights

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College stayed in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Women's Basketball Championship Tournament with a 60-48 win over Clarkson University in Bristol Gym tonight. Sophomore Chloe Hayter recorded her eighth career double-double with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Herons.

The Herons (15-9, 9-6) are tied for fourth place in the standings with Union (14-9, 9-6). William Smith is in the tournament with a win over St. Lawrence or a Vassar victory over Union.

Hayter was joined in double figures by junior Sasha Borenstein, who made five second half 3-pointers for 15 points. Senior Sydni Salvatore scored nine points and senior Jaimie Rubin added a game-high six assists. The Herons matched their season-low with just nine turnovers and enjoyed a 41-31 rebounding advantage.

For Clarkson (4-19, 2-13), Leighann Tomita scored 15 points. Ashley Loggins added 13 points and four assists. The Golden Knights shot 43.2 percent from the floor and were 4-of-12 from beyond the arc, but committed 20 turnovers.

William Smith struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 22.7 percent from the floor, but owned a 29-17 advantage in rebounds and was plus six in turnover margin. Neither team led by more than four points and they went into the locker room at halftime tied at 24. Hayter led all players with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

The contest remained close in the opening minutes of the second half. Tomita made a jumper at the 12:11 mark to forge the game's seventh and final tie, 35-35. The Herons responded with a 12-3 run, fueled by a trio of triples from Borenstein, to seize a 47-38 lead.

The Golden Knights were only down seven, 51-44, with 4:44 remaining, but Hayter made it a 9-point lead with a layup and Borenstein iced the win with two more treys. William Smith shot much better after the break, connecting on 48.1 percent of its shots, including 6-of-10 from deep.

William Smith will close out the regular season at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, when the Herons host St. Lawrence. Clarkson will also play tomorrow at 2 p.m., traveling to RIT.
