NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) became the third student-athlete in State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone with a first half three-pointer in the Hawks' (22-3, 16-2 SUNYAC) 55-54 overtime loss to SUNY Oneonta (13-12, 10-8 SUNYAC) in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Friday at the Hawk Center.
McCullough joins Robin Shields '00 (1,135 points) and Jasmine Sanchez '99 (1,066 points) as the only members of the New Paltz women's basketball team's 1,000-point club. She is also the first women's basketball player to reach the milestone in 13 years.
The Hawks saw their 18-game winning streak at the Hawk Center come to an abrupt end on Friday after Alyshia Crawford sank a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to put the game out of reach for the Hawks. Needing four points to tie, junior guard Alyssa Gratien (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) tried to draw a potential four-point play by taking a three and forcing contact. Gratien sank the three, but no foul was called, allowing the clock to expire.
Crawford sent the game into overtime after erasing the Hawks' late three-point lead with a longball at the 1:15 mark. New Paltz was fortunate that Grace Schilling was unable to make either of her two free throw attempts with 30 seconds on the clock, as either attempt could have given Oneonta the lead and possibly the win. Gratien attempted a 30-foot three as the clock hit zero, but bricked it off the front of the rim to head into the extra period.
The Hawks earned their first lead of the game at the 6:11 mark in the first half when freshman forward Michelle Valle (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science/Mathematics) drained a layup to break the 13-13 tie. The Red Dragons took it right back on Kelly Mulligan's three-pointer, but senior guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) hit a layup to put the Hawks up once again. Freshman guard Christine Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Valley Stream) followed with a three to give the Hawks their biggest lead of the half, but the Red Dragons fought back to take a three-point lead into the locker room.
Fisher earned her third-straight double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds (13 offensive) in Friday's loss. Valle picked up her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. Junior forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) turned in a solid effort with six points, nine rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
Oneonta was led by Crawford, who scored 18 points in the Red Dragons' win. Schilling followed with 11, while Sarah Longto led Oneonta with nine rebounds.
The Hawks shot just 26 percent (20-of-77) from the field on Friday, while Oneonta shot 30 percent (15-of-50). New Paltz shot a season-low 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the charity stripe compared to Oneonta's 70 percent (21-of-30). The Hawks dominated on the offensive boards, holding a 28-16 edge, leading to a 51-49 advantage in total rebounds.
With the No. 1 seed in the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament locked up, the Hawks have earned a bye in the quarterfinal round and will host the semifinal and final rounds of the tournament, which will take place from Friday, Feb. 22, to Saturday, Feb. 23. SUNY Geneseo (18-6, 13-4 SUNYAC) has also earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed.
