TROY, NY (February 5, 2013) – In a pivotal Liberty League contest, the Vassar College women's basketball team made big plays in the final two minutes of the game to thwart off a late rally by Rensselaer and secure a big 61-57 victory on Tuesday night at East Campus Arena.
Down by as many as xx points in the second half, the Engineers drew took a 55-54 lead with 2:17 remaining in the game. Vassar answered by making its last three field goals.
The first came from forward Colleen O'Connell to give the Brewers a 56-55 lead at the 2:02 mark, one they wouldn't relinquish. After RPI missed it next field goal attempt, sophomore Nyah Berg made a layup for a 58-55 Brewer lead. With RPI hanging on 58-57, freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley made another layup with 22 seconds remaining to secure the victory. A single free throw from junior forward Hannah Senftleber accounted for the 61-57 final.
Vassar, which has now won four straight games – and in league play – improves to 17-4, 9-3. RPI drops to 11-9, 5-6. The Brewers will next host William Smith on Friday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m. RPI travels to St. Lawrence on Friday.
The game was a slugfest, but only tied once and the Brewers were able to make big plays when it counted, scoring 22 points off second chance efforts versus four by the Engineers. The Brewers were tenacious off the backboard, outrebounding RPI 55-29, with three players having ten or more rebounds.
RPI held a 19-14 lead at the 10-minute mark, but with four minutes until halftime, Vassar took a 30-27 lead on the strength of baskets from senior forward Natalie Allen, freshman guard Alex Moon and O'Connell.
Within the first 2:14 of the second half, a layup by Senftleber gave the Brewers a 38-31 lead and at the 12:20 juncture, a jumper by junior guard Cydni Matsuoka pushed Vassar ahead 44-36.
RPI then made its comeback.
With graduate student Sarah Wetmore leading the way, the Engineers hung within striking range, getting a layup by freshmanAshley Clough to make the game 50-47 and then a jumper by Sophomore Jen Rock to trail 52-49 with five minutes left.
RPI outscored Vassar 6-0 in a two-minute span to take a 55-54 lead with 2:17 remaining.
Matsuoka led the Brewers with 16 points and O'Connell earned her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senftleber and Drakeley both had 10 rebounds.
Wetmore single-handedly kept her team in the game with a 22-point, 10 rebound performance, which included 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Rock chipped in 12 points.
