GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was a tough road trip for the Trine University women's basketball team as they headed to No. 2 Calvin College after their initial game was cancelled on Saturday due to snow. The long drive to face the Knights was made even tougher with the 86-50 loss for the Thunder. Trine drops to 11-10 on the season and remain tied with Alma for the fourth and final spot in the MIAA Tournament with a 5-7 record.
It was a defensive battle through the opening 10 minutes of the game as Trine held the seventh ranked scoring offense in the country to just 14 points.
After Calvin hit the opening shot of the game, Trine senior Sydney Spragg (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) would answer back with a three to give the Thunder the lead. After a pair of free throws by the Knights, Spragg would score again for the Thunder to regain the lead, but that would be their final lead of the game. Calvin would score the next six points as they took the lead 10-5, one they would never relinquish.
With Trine trailing by just five at 14-9 with 10:46 to play in the half, the Knights would close out the half on a 27-11 run to lead the Thunder 41-20 at the break.
The second half wasn't much kinder to the Thunder as Calvin pushed their lead to a game-high 42 points just seven minutes in after opening the half on a 25-4 scoring run. Trine would cut the lead to 33 points, but would be unable to pull any closer the rest of the way.
Sophomore Kelsey Henselmeier (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) led the Thunder with 11 points off the bench on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. In addition, Henselmeier pulled down five boards in the game. Also scoring in double-digits for the Thunder off the bench was freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) adding in 10 points. Spragg and freshman Alivia Recker (Arlington, Ohio/Arlington) each contributed seven points. Senior Megan Loveberry (Quincy, Mich./Quincy) led the Thunder with six rebounds on the night.
Trine won't have any time to rest because of the makeup, as they get right back to action on February 6 when they travel to Adrian for a 6:00 p.m. game.
