STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team dropped a tough, 49-43, decision at the College of Staten Island on Monday night. With the regular season's end in sight, CSI remains in fourth place in the CUNY Athletic Conference with a 9-4 record (12-10 overall), while Lehman stays in seventh place at 3-10 (3-18 overall).

Lehman jumped out early in the game, taking a 4-0 lead on a pair of free throws by senior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy). Minutes later, freshman guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made the first of her two three pointers on the night, and Lehman led 9-6 at the 14:30 mark.

As the first half rolled on, Lehman would lead by as many as six points, with just 4:19 to play, when junior Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back, making the score 18-12. But the Dolphins would go on a 7-0 run to end the half, taking a slim 19-18 lead into the break.

In the second half, Navarro's second three pointer of the night tied the score, just 1:39 in. CSI would go on a 7-0 run before junior forward Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Center) and Powell connected on back-to-back possessions to trim the lead back to just three points.

Lehman would shave that lead to just two points – thrice – in the next few minutes. The lead would fluctuate from that to as many as seven points, for the rest of the game, as Lehman defense stifled the creative CSI offensive.

CSI would shoot just 28.1% on the evening, due to the pesky Lehman defense. Lehman would struggle as well, shooting just 24.6%. The ultimate difference in the game was the 11 points Staten Island scored off of 28 Lehman turnovers.

As a team, Lehman out-rebounded CSI 60-46.

On the night, Powell led all scorers with 26 points, while Navarro chipped in eleven. Freshman Luisayra Madrigal (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

For the Lightning, the final road game of the regular season is next, a Wednesday, February 4 trip to face the City College of New York.
