No. 9 Saints Earn Eighth Straight 20-Win Season With 77-53 Win Over PAC Rival W&J

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The ninth-ranked Thomas More women's basketball earned its eighth straight 20-win season with a 77-53, win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, February 2, 2013) at the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 20-1 overall and 14-0 in the PAC, while extending their winning streak to 17 games.  With the loss, the Presidents fall to 14-7 overall and 9-5 in the PAC.

Thomas More took an early 5-0 lead when sophomore forward Jenny Burgoyne (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) made a lay-up with 19:32 to play in the first half.  W&J answered with an 8-3 run to tie the game at 8-8 on a Chelsea Apke jumper with 17:04 to play in the half.  The Saints closed out the half on a 21-10 run to take a 39-18 lead at intermission when Burgoyne made a lay-up with 2:25 to play in the opening half.

The Presidents opened the second half on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 41-25 with 17:37 to play in the game when Emily Abraham made a three-pointer.  The Saints responded with a 16-7 run to extend the lead to 57-32 with 11:34 to play in the game when junior guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer.  W&J answered with an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 60-40 with 8:04 to play in the game when Erin Lavery made a lay-up.  That would be as close as W&J would come as Thomas More extended the lead to as many as 28 points and closed out the game on a 17-13 run for the 77-53 victory.

Senior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) led all scorers with 20 points, while Beasley and Burgoyne joined her in double-figure scoring with 17 and 13 points respectively.  Burgoyne led the team on the boards with six rebounds, while junior forward Moriah Corey (Louisville, Ky./Butler) pulled down five.  Beasley led the team in assists with five and blocks with two, while Long led the team in steals with four.

Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (February 6) when it travels to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to play Westminster College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
