POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 1, 2013) – It was virtually an even game for the first half, but the Vassar College women's basketball team began the set half ablaze, outscoring Clarkson University 28-7 in the opening ten minutes, en route to an 81-50 victory in Liberty League play on Friday night at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

After the Brewers jumped out to a 13-4 lead, Clarkson made the first 20 minutes an arduous affair for Vassar. The Golden Knights, riding a 10 point first half from sophomore guard Leighann Tomita and an additional seven points from sophomore Jovanna Snead, cut into the Vassar lead to 27-26 with 2:22 to play following a jumper by freshman forward Ashley Loggins.

With the victory, Vassar improves to 15-4, 7-3 in the Liberty League. Clarkson falls to 2-16, 0-10. The Brewers will host St. Lawrence on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Clarkson heads to Bard College on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. game.

Vassar went into halftime holding a 32-28 lead, and then went on a tear to start the second half. The 28-7 game-changing run was ignited by senior guard Ali Higgins, who had seven points on an array of outside shots and sophomore guard Nyah Berg, who had six points. Junior guard Cydni Matsuoka, sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell and freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley all contributed in the run that saw the Brewers build a 60-35 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Vassar was buoyed by a 49 percent second half shooting performance.

The Golden Knights were in catch-up mode from that point, hampered by 22 turnovers that enabled Vassar to score 29 points. Against an aggressive Vassar defense, Clarkson made only 5 of 32 field goals in the second half.

A jumper by Vassar's Allyson Pemberton at the 5:51 mark pushed Vassar ahead 73-52.

The Brewers placed four players in double figures, all of whom didn't play more than 29 minutes. Matsuoka and Berg each had 15 points, O'Connell and Drakeley added 11 points and each. Junior forward Hannah Senftleber had nine points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Higgins finished with nine points.

Clarkson was led by 20 points and 13 rebounds from Loggins and 16 from Tomita. Snead chipped in with 12 points, scoring ten of those from the free throw line..
