WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College women's basketball team came within just four points of ending nationally-ranked Babson College's incredble New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) winning streak on Wednesday night, but the Beavers survived in a nail-biter, 52-48, thanks to outstanding performances from senior captains Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.) and Allanah Wynn (Quincy, Mass.).

Collins played all 40 minutes and recorded game-high's of 16 points and eight rebounds for Babson (18-2, 13-0 NEWMAC, ranked 22nd D3hoops.com, 18th USA Today), which has now won 78 straight games against league opponents. Wynn also came up big with eight points, including four key free throws late in regulation, while also adding four boards and three steals. First-year Megan Otto (Scituate, Mass.) continued her brilliant play of late, finishing with four points and five rebounds to go with career-highs of seven assists, four blocks, and two steals, and sophomore Erin Young (Westwood, Mass.) tacked on nine points courtey of a trio of three-pointers.

Leslie Leong led Wellesley (10-7, 9-4 NEWMAC) with 12 points in defeat.

The Blue led by three at 39-36 midway through the second half and later held a 40-41 edge after a Leong transition bucket with 7:51 remaining. However, Young knocked in a pair of treys and Wynn sank two free throws to give Babson a 48-43 cushion with 5:11 on the clock, and the vaunted Beaver defense held Wellesley without a point for the next two and a half minutes.

A lay-up by Collins and two more foul shots by Wynn extended Babson's lead to seven, 52-45, with 1:08 left in the game, and a Leong three-pointer would be the only bucket in the final minute as the Beavers escaped with the 52-48 victory.

GAME NOTES: This was closest final score of Babson's 78-game winning streak against league foes dating back in 2009. Prior to tonight's four-point contest, the Beavers' smallest margin of victory was five points, which came in their 61-56 win over WPI in the NEWMAC Championship Game on February 28, 2010.
