Pioneers romp past Earlham, 73-57

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Transylvania placed four players in double figures Wednesday and romped past Earlham 73-57 in women's Heartland Conference basketball action at the Beck Center.
 
Transy, the HCAC league leader, is 16-4, 12-1 in the conference, while the Quakers are 3-17, 2-11. The Pioneers have an eight-game win streak along with a two-game lead in the HCAC race over Franklin.
 
Nicole Coffman had 25 points to lead all scorers and she added five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.Alex Botkin notched 14 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of her career. Katelyn Smith also had 14 points and six rebounds while Alex McKenzie pitched in 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had three steals and three blocks.
 
JaLissa Watt led Earlham with 18 points.
 
Transy led by as many as 16 points in the first half, which ended with the home team on top, 38-25. Coffman led the way with 14 points and Botkin added nine. Smith had six points and five rebounds.
 
Transy shot 44 percent in the half to just 31 percent for Earlham and the Pioneers also had a 23-18 rebounding edge. That led to a 14-8 scoring edge in the paint and a 10-4 advantage on second chance scoring.
 
For the game, Transy shot 40 percent from the field and was 19 of 21 from the free throw line. Earlham connected on just 31 percent and made only four of 20 from behind the arc. The Quakers made all five of their free throws.
 
Transy's largest lead was 21 points early in the second half.
 
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they host HCAC rival Rose-Hulman at 1 p.m. at the Beck Center.
