Cortland Women Hold On to Defeat Brockport, 59-56

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Caysea Cohen scored 17 points as Cortland held off a late charge to defeat Brockport, 59-56, in a SUNYAC matchup. The Red Dragons led by 19 points late in the first half and by 10 with 2:22 left, but Brockport rallied only to have a potential game-tying three-pointer miss at the buzzer.

Cohen finished 7-of-14 from the floor as Cortland improved to 7-10 overall and 5-6 in the league. Junior Grace Williamson recorded 11 points and six rebounds, junior Megan Touhey scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists, and sophomore Brittany Rando added nine points.

Sophomore Erin Wolstenholme shared the team rebounding lead with Williamson with six caroms. Sophomore Lindsay Minor chipped in with five rebounds and three assists.

Alexandra Marshall came off the bench to lead Brockport (6-14, 3-10 SUNYAC) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Phoebe Byrnes scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards and Hannalee Fordyce made 5-of-6 shots in a 12-point, 6-rebound effort. Ellen Story contributed nine points and a team-high four assists for the Golden Eagles.

Cortland led 33-14 after a Sarah Shine layup with 57 seconds left in the first half, but Byrnes made two three-pointers to draw Brockport within 33-20 at halftime. The Golden Eagles fought to within seven points at 39-32 on a Byrnes jumper with 11:36 left, but Cortland re-established a 15-point lead at 51-36 when Touhey hit a three-pointer with 7:50 left.

The Red Dragons still led by 10 points at 56-46 with 2:22 remaining before Brockport mounted its final comeback. The Golden Eagles drew within 58-54 on a Story jumper with 36 seconds on the clock. Rando made 1-of-2 free throws with 31 seconds left, but Story connected on two foul shots with 17 seconds left to make it a one-possession game.

Cortland missed two free throws with 11 seconds left and Brockport called timeout with six seconds remaining. However, Byrnes missed a contested three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

Cortland will travel to Fredonia on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m.
