SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The 24th-ranked Babson College women's basketball team opened with a 21-0 run and never looked back as the Beavers defeated host Mount Holyoke College, 70-52, in a NEWMAC contest at Howard Gym on Saturday.
Extending their winning streak against conference opponents to 77 games, the Beavers improved to 17-2 overall and 12-0 in league play.
Senior captain Sarah Collins recorded her Division III-leading 16th double-double of the season in the win for Babson, amassing 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go with 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. First-year Kristen Ferola chipped in nine points, fellow rookie Alicia Wilde added seven points and five boards, and freshman Linnett Graber tacked on four points, five caroms, and a game-high four assists.
The Green and White wasted no time in taking control of the contest, rattling off 21 unanswered points while holding Mount Holyoke scoreless for the first 9:45 of the first half. Collins scored eight points during the opening barrage, while Ferola added a four-play play.
The Beavers' lead eventually reached 33 after a Ferola three-pointer made it 45-12 late in the first half, and the Lyons never got closer than 17 the rest of the way as Babson coasted to the 18-point win.
Babson returns to action with a 7 p.m. road tilt at Wellesley this Wednesday.
