GENEVA, NY (January 26, 2013) – William Smith used a balanced offensive attack and timely outside shooting to defeat the Vassar College women's basketball team, 67-59, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Bristol Gym.

The game's momentum swung in William Smith's favor at the 3:32 mark of the first half and followed the tenth tie at 24-24. The Herons went on a 9-2 run, capped by three 3-point shots, two that came from junior guard Sasha Borenstein. Conversely, the long ball wasn't friendly for Vassar, which went 1-8 from behind the arc. Seventeen Vassar turnovers resulted in 21 points for William Smith.

The loss drops Vassar to 13-4, 5-3 on the season. William Smith improves to 12-6, 6-3. The Brewers will next host Bard on January 28 at 6:00 p.m. William Smith next hosts RPI on February 1 at 6:00 p.m.

Trailing 35-28 at halftime, the Brewers were able to tie the game twice, at 46-46 and 48-48, but were unable to secure a lead in the final 9:54 of the game. A layup by sophomore Chloe Hayter at the 8:00 minute mark gave the Herons a 55-50 lead. An old-fashioned three-point play by freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley got Vassar within 55-53, but William Smith went on a 6-0 run for a 61-53 lead with 3:37 to play.

Over the final minutes, William Smith scored four of its final six points off free throws, all coming from senior guard Sydni Salvatore, who helped the Herons keep Vassar at bay. 

Sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell led the Brewers with 16 points on 7 of 15 shooting from the field. Junior forward Hannah Senftleber and Drakeley both tallied 11 points.

William Smith was led by junior guard Jacqueline Murphy with 14 points. Salvatore tallied 12 points, eight of them coming from the free throw line. Borenstein chipped in with 12.
