WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (14-6, 8-4 NJAC) locked up a bid for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Women's Basketball Tournament with an 81-55 home victory against Rowan (5-15, 1-11 NJAC) Jan. 26.
With the win, the Pioneers stayed a half-game out of second place in the league standings with four regular-season conference games remaining, and have secured one of the six bids for the NJAC Tournament that begins Feb. 16.
The Pioneers held the Profs without a field goal for the first 7:25 of the contest, scoring the first 20 points of the game while forcing Rowan into 0-for-8 shooting and 12 turnovers during the span. The Profs finished the half with 19 turnovers, resulting in a 24-9 WP advantage in points off the miscues, and William Paterson carried a 40-25 lead into the locker room.
It was more of the same for WP during the second half as the Pioneers' advantage grew to as many as 32 (72-40, 9:05). Junior guard Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) led all scorers with 24 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 effort from the free-throw line, adding six assists. Sophomore forward Ashley Marfo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) notched her fourth double-double of the season with 10 tallies and 10 rebounds, adding a career-best seven steals, and junior guard Kristine Jackiewicz (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) contributed 13 points and eight boards. Freshmen guards Sara Luberto (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) and Jessi Corredor (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) each chipped in seven points off the bench.
Sophomore guard Bria Hill led Rowan with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Megan Russ and freshman Heidi Avrov each finished with 10 tallies.
William Paterson will play at Rutgers-Newark Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6:00 p.m.
