GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Symonne Newsome (Reistertown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) hit two free throws to give Virginia Wesleyan College a 38-36 lead with 8:49 remaining at Guilford College on Saturday, but the Marlins were unable to expand on it. Fourteen seconds later Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) nailed a three-pointer for the host Quakers to regain the lead and league-leading Guilford held off the visiting Marlins the rest of the way.  Quilford outscored 22-11 in the final minutes to post a 58-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.  The eighth consecutive win for Guilford improved its record to 16-3 overall and to 9-1 in the league.  VWC is now 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the league. Virginia Wesleyan led just once in the first, 17-16 after a free throw by Sarah Seipp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), but Guilford regained the edge and posted a 24-21 lead at halftime. Virginia Wesleyan kept the pressure on the Quakers throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half, tying the score at 30 all on a layup by sophomore Andrea Paphites (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne), and taking the lead on the Newsome free throws.  Guilford shook it off however, to take the upperhand through the waning minutes. Long-range shooting was not kind to the Marlins, who attempted 18 triples and hit only one by senior Rachael Miller (Sterling/Park View).  Sophomore Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) emerged as the VWC leader overall with 11 points and six rebounds.  Newsome, Miller and Paphites scored eight points each for the Marlins. Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor), Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) and Brittany Atwater (Durham, N.C./Ravenscroft) scored 14 points each to lead Guilford. Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, Jan. 30, hosting Randolph-Macon College at 6 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. --AMDG--
