GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team's (15-1, 9-1 SUNYAC) hopes for a perfect season ended Friday evening, as the Hawks fell to SUNY Geneseo (9-2, 13-4 SUNYAC), 73-43, at Carl Schrader Gymnasium.
The host Blue Knights opened the game with an 11-0 run, pushing the lead to 18-3 before the Hawks began to rally back. Geneseo pulled out to a 22-7 lead when the Hawks closed the first half on a 22-7 run to tie the game at 29.
Geneseo stormed out to a 20-0 run to open the second half and never looked back. The Hawks pulled within 15 points at the 8:31 mark on a layup by senior guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), but were outscored 22-7 the rest of the way.
Melissa Graham picked up 15 points and 15 rebounds for Geneseo, leading all scorers in both categories. Allison McKenna also picked up a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards in the win for the Blue Knights.
Fisher led the Hawks with eight points in the loss, while also pulling down five rebounds. Senior guard Kahsyrah Bryant (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) also grabbed five boards and added five points.
Geneseo dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Hawks 63-28. Despite the large scoring deficit, the Hawks only turned the ball over eight times while taking the ball away 21 times. Geneseo shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the field on Friday, compared to just 25 percent (18-of-72) for the Hawks.
The Hawks look to get back on track tomorrow, Jan. 26, as they take on The College at Brockport. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
