Nationally-Ranked Babson Defeats WPI

Worcester, MA --- Senior Sarah Collins (Weymouth, MA) posted her 15th double-double of the season to pace nationally-ranked Babson by host WPI 65-45 in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest played in Harrington Auditorium on Wednesday evening. 

The win was Babson's 76th straight against NEWMAC opponents and ups the Beavers record to 16-2 on the season and a perfect 11-0 in the conference.  WPI, the last NEWMAC team to defeat Babson, falls to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play. 

Collins tallied eight points as the visitors raced out to 16-4 advantage midway through the first half.  The returning All-American notched 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor to go along with seven rebounds as the Beavers took a 34-14 lead into the locker room at the intermission.  

The teams played a tightly-contested second half, each registering 31 points.  The final 20 minutes was played within a seven point window, with the lead ranging from 17 to 24 points. 

Collins drained 11-of-18 of her shots from the field, ending with 22 points to go along with 13 boards and five blocks.  Linnett Garber (Roseland, NJ) was the only Beaver to reach double figures in scoring.  The freshman forward collected 11 points in addition to four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.  Senior guard Allanah Wynn (Quincy, MA) added seven points while Briana Hunt (Newton, MA) and Erin Young (Westwood, MA) both contributed six points off the bench. 

Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) led the WPI charge with team-bests of nine points and seven rebounds.  Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) tossed in eight points while Siena Mamayek (Melrose, MA) and Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) chipped in with six and five points respectively.  Point guard Rachel Pineda (Shrewsbury, MA) filled the stat sheets with game-high four assists to go along with six rebounds, four points and a steal.  

Babson ended the game with a 34-12 advantage in points in the paints and parlayed 23 WPI turnovers into 23 points.

Both squads are on the road Saturday.  WPI heads to Cambridge to take on MIT at 2pm while Babson ventures to South Hadley to meet Mount Holyoke at 1pm.
