ONEONTA, N.Y. – Kristin Pappalardo scored 23 points, including 10 free throws over the final minute and five seconds, as Oneonta held off Cortland, 74-70, in a SUNYAC contest. Oneonta is 7-9 with the win and Cortland drops to 6-9. Both teams are 4-5 in league play.
Pappalardo finished 14-of-16 from the foul line and also recorded seven assists and six steals. Alyshia Crawford made 4-of-6 three-pointers and ended with 21 points, three assists and three steals, and Sarah Longto led the hosts with nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Junior Megan Touhey led four Cortland double-figure scorers with 19 points and also registered three assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Lindsey Minor scored 12 points and sophomore Erin Wolstenholme scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Also for Cortland, freshman Caysea Cohen finished with 10 points and six assists and junior Sarah Shine made 4-of-6 shots and ended with eight points and six rebounds.
Cortland led 30-20 on a Touhey jumper with 14 seconds left in the first half and held a 30-23 halftime lead after Bryn Loomis' three-pointer for Oneonta with two seconds remaining. Oneonta quickly cut Cortland's lead to two less than four minutes into the second half and eventually took a 44-43 lead on a Crawford layup with 10:32 left.
The game was tied at 52-52 after a Shine jumper with 6:12 remaining, but Oneonta scored the next seven points, five by Crawford, and went up 59-52 with 2:44 on the clock. The host Red Dragons grabbed their largest lead at 63-55 at the 1:33 mark.
Three-pointers by Minor and sophomore Brittany Rando, sandwiched around two Pappalardo free throws, brought Cortland within four with 52 seconds left. Trailing by five, Cortland got back to within two points on a Touhey three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining and, after one Pappalardo foul shot, drew within one on a Touhey layup with 18 seconds left.
Pappalardo sank two foul shots to push the Oneonta lead to three. Cortland quickly moved downcourt and Minor hit a layup with nine seconds left to once again make it a one-point game. Oneonta's Kelly Mulligan hit the second of two free throws with six seconds left to put the hosts up 72-70. Minor took the inbounds pass and raced into the frontcourt, but her layup attempt missed the mark with two seconds left. A jump ball was called on the rebound, with the arrow favoring Oneonta, and Pappalardo sealed the game with two foul shots with less than a second remaining.
Cortland will travel to Oswego on Saturday at 6 p.m.
