NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was the victim of a buzzer beater on Monday afternoon as the Bloodhounds lost to Rutgers-Camden 72-71 at the Doghouse in a non-league game.
 
The loss drops John Jay to 9-8 overall this season, while Rutgers-Camden improves to 7-10.
 
Loretta Kelly was the lone Scarlet Raptors starter to not score in double figures finishing with six, but her final two points came as time expired. The 5-3 sophomore guard received the inbounds pass from the sideline about 70 feet from the basket after a timeout. She split defenders on the wing and spun left under the basket, hitting the left handed lay-up. The game winner was the final lead change in a contest that saw nine lead changes and eight ties.
 
John Jay was led by Victoria Story with 17 points, while Simone Victor added 15 off the bench with six rebounds. Jamecia Forsythe had nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
 
Rutgers-Camden's other four starters scored in double figures and was led by Lillian Chukwueze with 17, while Brittany Turner added 16. Monica Burch had 13 and Rachel Hodge had 12.
 
The contest did not originally develop as one that would have a climatic ending.  Rutgers-Camden raced out early and led by as much as 14 in the first half. The Scarlet-Raptors led 27-13 with 7:42 remaining in the first period before John Jay came back and nearly closed the gap entirely. With Rutgers-Camden leading 29-16 at the 5:27 mark, the Bloodhounds used a 17-5 spurt to come to within one point of the lead with just under a minute to play before going into halftime down 36-33.
 
Rutgers-Camden tight roped the lead through the early stages of the second half, never leading by more than six while never trailing. The Bloodhounds tied the score for the first time since early in the game with 15:25 to play. But the visiting team went back on top and kept a slim lead. The Bloodhounds finally took the lead with 11:41 to play on a continuation three point play by Story.
 
Moments later, the Bloodhounds established an eight point lead and were up 65-57 with six and a half minutes to play.
 
But just over three minutes later, Rutgers-Camden capped off a 10-0 run to go back on top as the Scarlet Raptors took a 67-65 lead with 3:42 to go.
 
John Jay tied the score with 3:01 remaining as the final one hundred and eighty-one seconds saw a combined four lead changes and ties.
 
The Bloodhounds took their final lead of the game with 1:16 to go on a lay-up by Victor that put John Jay up 71-70. From there John Jay and Rutgers-Camden shot a combined 0-for-5 (and 0-for-1 from the free throw line) and committed a turnover each before Kelly's buzzer shot.
 
The two teams had nearly identical numbers inside as the Scarlet Raptors held a slight 30-28 edge on points in the paint.
 
John Jay committed 15 turnovers to 13 for Rutgers-Camden, but the Scarlet Raptors held a 20-6 advantage on points off turnovers.
 
John Jay is back in action on Wednesday for a game at conference foe CCNY at 12 p.m.
