NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team travelled on Wednesday night to face the top school in the CUNYAC, Baruch College, and took a 64-39 loss. Baruch is now 13-1 overall, and 7-0 in the conference, while Lehman is now 1-14, and 1-6.
The Lightning got out to a fast start, and built an early 8-3 lead, as freshman Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made back-to-back three-pointers, followed by a layup from junior Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Center).
From there, Baruch went on a 13-0 run, before senior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) made jumpers on consecutive possessions, cutting the lead to four points, 16-12.
The Lightning would keep the game close, with the deficit only three points, 21-18, with 5:21 to play in the first half, when freshman Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) drove the lane and made a layup. Baruch would then go on a run, and took a 30-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Navarro scored on Lehman's first possession, draining a three-pointer, bringing the score to 30-24. From there, the host Bearcats seized control of the game from there, and remained undefeated in the CUNYAC.
For the game, Navarro paced the Lightning with 18 points, making four three-pointers in the game. On the season, Navarro is currently ranked second in all of Division III in three-pointers made per game, with 3.46.
Powell also was in double figures in scoring, pouring in 15 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lightning continue their mini road trip on Friday, January 18, travelling to face York (N.Y.) College.
