NYU Notches First UAA Win

The New York University women's basketball team picked up its first University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the season with a 64-57 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, January 13, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
 
The Violets (8-6, 1-2) got double-doubles from Megan Dawe and Riley Wurtz and forced 28 Tartan (10-4, 2-1) turnovers in the win. Along with the University of Rochester's 56-48 defeat of #3 Washington University, the game shook up the UAA standings, leaving five teams tied for first at 2-1 and NYU just one game back in the early going.
 
Highlights
 
- Dawe posted 14 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Wurtz had 14 points, 10 boards and six assists to notch her fifth double-double.
 
- The Violets controlled the early stages of the game, getting three three-pointers from Cassidy Jourdan to build a 16-6 lead.
 
- A Dawe layup made it 35-24 late in the first half, but Carnegie Mellon scored eight straight points to end the half trailing only by three.
 
- The Tartans briefly gained their first lead in the opening minutes of the second period, but NYU scored 10 straight to pull back ahead, 45-36.
 
- From there, Carnegie Mellon got no closer than five as NYU responded time and again to the Tartans' makes.
 
- Jourdan finished with 14 points, sinking four three-pointers. Peng also scored in double figures with 10 points and added a career-high-tying seven assists without a turnover.
 
"We moved the ball better today and did all the little things," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We stayed in our offense and were able to put strong offensive and defensive efforts together.
 
"This win proves that we can play with anyone in this league," she added. "Carnegie Mellon is a good team that came in undefeated in the UAA."
 
The Violets are back in action this weekend for their UAA Midwest trip. They first take on #3 Washington at 6:00 pm cst in St. Louis, MO.
