POTSDAM, NY (January 12, 2013) – The knockout blow came with 6:52 remaining until halftime. Leading 15-11, the Vassar College women's basketball team went on an 20-5 run to take a 19-point lead at intermission and cruised to a 63-36 victory over Clarkson University in Liberty League play on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The 20-point scoring blitz came courtesy of junior guard Cydni Matsuoka and sophomore guard Nyah Berg. That dynamic duo did all the scoring – each plunking home 10 points each. The Brewers closed out the first half scoring eight straight points and began the second half with a 15-4 frenzy in the first 6:20 of the second half for a commanding 50-20 lead. The Golden Knights weren't able to make a dent in the Vassar lead, enabling the entire Brewer roster to see action. The Vassar reserves outscored Clarkson 13-2.
The victory improves Vassar to 9-2, 2-1. Clarkson falls to 2-10, 0-4. The Brewers will return home to face Rensselaer to Tuesday, January 15 at 6:00 p.m. Clarkson hosts St. Lawrence on January 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Matsuoka scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half on 6 of 9 shooting. Berg added 10 of her 12 points in that stanza, and the pair shot a combined 10 of 17 from the floor, (59 percent). As a team, Vassar shot 57 percent in the first half, and had statistics skewed in its favor. The Brewers forced 14 turnovers had tallied 12 points off Clarkson miscues. In the second half, Vassar hit the boards hard, outrebounding Clarkson 30-16.
Freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley, sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell and junior forward Hannah Senftelber connected on Vassar baskets to begin the second half. Later in that scoring run Matsuoka drained a 3-pointer and added a jumper for her teams 30-20 lead.
Drakeley had eight points and five rebounds. Senftleber led Vassar with seven rebounds.
Clarkson got an outstanding 15-point, 12-rebound performance from freshman forward Ashley Loggins.
