No. 23 CNU Makes it 13 Straight to Start Season With 75-43 Win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. -- Yet another dominant defensive effort led 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport to a big 75-43 win on the road over Averett University (4-9, 3-3), extending their season-opening win streak to 13 games. The Captains improve to 13-0 overall, 6-0 against league opponents, led by a double-double from junior Nicole Mitchell. 

The CNU defense held Averett to just 17 first-half points, and 32.7% shooting in the game. The team came into the game ranked 15th in the nation in field goal percentage defense, and 7th in three-point defense. Averett managed just 17 made field goals in the game and was just 1-of-6 from long range (16.7%). 

Four different Captains finished in double figures, led by Mitchell's double-double. The junior grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and knocked down 6 of her 11 shots, finishing with 12 points. She added five assists, two blocked shots and a steal as she filled the stat sheet. 

CNU raced out to a big first half lead as Mitchell dominated the glass in the first stanza. She collected nine of her 13 boards in the first half, helping CNU post double digit points in the paint and second-chance points.

With the score at 10-8 after a jumper by Caroline Young, the Captains went on a 10-3 run for some breathing room. The score was 20-11 with 7:55 remaining in the first half. Another 14-4 run to finish out the half gave CNU a big 17-point lead, 34-17. Rookie Kendra Stone scored five points in the stretch. 

Another run to open the second half put the game out of reach. CNU scored 16 of the first 18 points, racing ahead by 31 points at 50-19. The surge was quick, as Brandi Holland capped the run with a fast-break layup just 5:12 into the second half. The lead would build to as many as 40 points, a 71-31 with 4:06 remaining, before the Captains closed out the win for a 75-43 final. 

Camry Green led all scorers with 15 points, while Mitchell and senior Kelly Halverson each had 12. Rookie Kendra Stone just missed her first career double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Holland added nine points off the bench for the Captains. 

Carolina Young had 11 points and eight boards for Averett, while Shannon Smith (2-14) and Aundrea Burns (3-6) were the only other Cougar players to knock down more than one shot. Smith finished with five points and Burns added six. 

The Captains will put their sterling 13-0 record on the line next when they travel to North Carolina Wesleyan this Wednesday, January 16. Tip is set for 7:00 pm against the Battling Bishops, with a live video webcast presented at CNUsports.com/LIVE.
