BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team rallied late in the game, but could not overcome the College of Staten Island on Tuesday evening, falling 67-53. CSI improves to 7-6 overall, including 4-1 in the CUNYAC, while Lehman drops to 1-11, and 1-3. CSI is now in sole possession of second place in the conference.
In the first half, CSI used a 15-0 run early in the game to take a commanding lead. The Dolphins eventually led by as many as 21 points in the first half, but took a 38-20 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Lightning scratched back, opening up on with a 12-4 run. Junior Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), who was playing in her first game since joining the team, hit a three-pointer at the 14:46 mark to make the score 44-32.
Minutes later, freshman Luisayra Madrigal (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan) made a layup to cut the lead to ten points, 47-37. Eventually, the Lightning would get as close as nine points, when Powell hit another three pointer.
The Dolphins managed to gain their composure at that point, and went on to win, 67-53.
For the game, Powell managed a double-double in her first game, scoring 18 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added 13 points, while freshman Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) chipped in 10. Junior forward Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Campus) led the team in rebounding, with 14 boards.
The Lightning will host John Jay College on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the APEX at Lehman College.
