New Paltz Women Hold Off Cortland Upset Bid, 59-56

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Cortland missed two potential game-tying three-pointers in the final seconds and the Red Dragons lost at unbeaten New Paltz, 59-56, in a SUNYAC matchup. Alex McCullough led the host Hawks (11-0, 5-0 SUNYAC) with 23 points. Junior Megan Touhey paced Cortland (3-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) with 22 points.

Cortland held the largest lead by either team at 32-26 with 5:30 left in the first half after a Touhey three-point play. New Paltz eventually tied the game at 34-34 on a Michelle Valle free throw with 1:58 left, but sophomore Brittany Rando's jumper with 21 seconds left gave the Red Dragons a 36-34 halftime lead.

Cortland established a 40-36 lead on a Touhey free throw just over three minutes into the second half. New Paltz answered two minutes later with an Alyssa Gratien three-pointer, and the Hawks took the lead at 41-40 on McCullough's layup with 13:09 left and never trailed again.

Although Cortland never re-gained the lead, the Red Dragons tied the game four more times, the last at 53-53 on a three-pointer by freshman Caysen Cohen with 3:52 on the clock. The Hawks took the lead back on Kahsyrah Bryant's foul shot with 2:48 left, and neither team scored again until Valle hit a layup with 55 seconds left to put New Paltz ahead 56-53.

The Red Dragons turned the ball over with 44 seconds left and New Paltz's Shannan Walker made the second of two foul shots with 24 seconds remaining to push the lead to four. Touhey drove to the basket on the ensuing possession, hit the layup and was fouled with 17 seconds left. Her free throw pulled Cortland within one. McCullough sank two free throws with 12 seconds left. Cortland sophomore Lindsey Minor missed a three-pointer with five seconds left. Cohen grabbed the offensive board, but Touhey's three-pointer was blocked by Valle and the clock ran out.

McCullough hit 9-of-16 shots from the floor and also finished with seven rebounds and four blocks. Gratien scored 10 points, including three three-pointers, Valle led the team with nine rebounds and Walker added seven points, five assists and four steals.

Touhey made 3-of-5 three-pointers. Minor hit 2-of-5 treys and finished with 12 points, while Cohen grabbed seven of her team-high nine rebounds on the offensive glass. Cohen also dished out three assists and junior Grace Williamson had six rebounds.

Cortland will host Buffalo State Friday at 6 p.m. in a SUNYAC game.
