The William Smith College basketball team extended its winning streak to four games and picked up its first Liberty League win of the season by a count of 75-65 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tonight. Junior guard Erin O'Brien led three Herons in double figures with a career-high 17 points.
William Smith (7-3, 1-1) shot a season-high 41.9 percent from the floor with seven 3-pointers. O'Brien was 7-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long range. Junior guard Sasha Borenstein narrowly missed her first career double-double, producing 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Jaimie Rubin scored 13 points and shared game-high honors with four assists and two steals.
The Herons grabbed a season-high 58 rebounds and enjoyed their widest rebounding margin of the season (plus-20). Junior guard Jacqueline Murphy led the way with a team-high 10 boards. She raised her career total to 537, moving past Kristen Kush '12 into 12th place on the school's all-time rebounding list. Sophomore forward Molly Breen added nine rebounds.
The Engineers (6-4, 0-1) got game-highs of 20 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots from Sarah Wetmore and Jen Rock chipped in 18 points, seven boards, and four assists.
William Smith trailed by as many as seven in the early going, but the Herons used a 12-0 run to claim the lead for good. Borenstein scored the first eight points of the surge, sandwiching treys around a layup to put the visitors in front 25-23. Rubin capped the run with back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to six. William Smith carried a 36-33 lead into halftime.
The Herons came out of the break on fire, scoring the first 11 points of the second session. O'Brien keyed the run with seven straight points. Meanwhile, RPI was unable to get its offense in gear to start the half. William Smith harassed the Engineers into an 0-for-6 shooting effort with three turnovers in the first four and a half minutes.
William Smith was able to maintain a double digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they visit Skidmore. The Liberty League game is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m.
