Lady Choctaws Hold On for 48-44 Win Over Schreiner

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 48-44 victory over Schreiner on Thursday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Lady Choctaws (7-5, 4-2 ASC) were led by senior Ebony Williams with her second double-double in as many games, tallying 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Williams has scored in double-figures in five straight contest.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, combining to shoot just 27% (13-49) from the floor as MC grabbed a 20-13 lead over the Mountaineers (5-8, 1-6 ASC).

Coming out in the second half, senior Caitlin Brown made a layup with 16:33 remaining to give the Lady Choctaws their largest lead of the game at 30-17.  Brown finished with six points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Schreiner chipped away at the lead and a free throw by Katie Isom cut the advantage to 43-41 with 1:54 to go in the game.  Isom led all scorers with 17 points.

The Lady Choctaws outscored the Moutaineers 5-1 down the stretch to clinch the victory.  Senior Valeri Stewart knocked down two free throws in the final minute as part of her 10 points on the night.  She also led the team with four assists and three steals.

In the second half, MC shot 67% (12-18) from the floor and held Schreiner to just 33% (14-43) for the game.  The Lady Choctaws forced 19 turnovers and had four blocked shots.

Senior Traci Rodgers was also in double figures for MC, scoring 11 points on 5-9 shooting.  The Lady Choctaws outscored the Mountaineers in the paint, 32-14.

The Lady Choctaws will move on to host Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  Schreiner will face Louisiana College on the road on Saturday.
