Oswego State Suffers First Setback In 70-41 Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Oswego State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season (8-1) after dropping a 70-41 decision to William Paterson (8-3) in the first round of the Catholic University Courtyard US Capital Holiday Tourney on Sunday night. The Lakers will face the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 2 p.m. in the consolation game.
 
William Paterson built a 38-17 halftime lead due in large part to a 20-2 run for nearly the first 11 minutes of the game. The Pioneers controlled the lane during the first half, outscoring the Lakers 16-0 in the paint.
 
Oswego State was unable to cut the lead to fewer than 20 points in the second half, as the Lakers allowed a season-high 70 points.
 
Guards Kari Kipper (Sr., Loudonville, N.Y.) and Lauren Nunziato (Jr., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) paced the Oswego State with eight points each, while Taryn Smith (Sr., Ontario, N.Y.) came off the bench to grab five rebounds. Oswego State shot 27.1 percent from the floor (13-for-48) and 60.0 percent from the free throw line (9-for-15).
 
William Paterson was led by Dana Jeter, who scored 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. She was joined in double-digits by Floriana Borova, who added 14 points. The Pioneers finished the contest going 25-for-58 from the field (43.1 percent) and 6-for-12 from long range (50.0 percent).
