FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – Junior guard Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) and freshman forward Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow HS) combined for 42 of Hartwick's 61 points on Monday to lead the Hawks to a 61-49 victory over Randolph-Macon College in the 2012 Cruzin Classic at Nova Southeastern University's Don Taft Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 7-2 overall. The Yellowjackets fall to 1-9 with the loss.
Hartwick trailed at halftime, 28-26, but an 11-2 run to start the second half would give the Hawks the advantage for the rest of the night. 'Wick led by as many as 10 points early in the half before the Jackets pulled to within four, 51-47, with six minutes to play. The Hawks, however, would seal the win with 10 straight points over the next three and a half minutes.
"We played a great second half tonight," remarked Hartwick head coach Missy West. "We took better care of the basketball and got some great looks at the basket."
Foglia and Dumas combined to shoot 14-of-22 from the floor, 4-of-5 from three-point range, and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in the contest. Dumas also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Foglia tied the game-high with four steals.
Junior guard Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) contributed a game- and season-high eight assists to go along with seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Neither the Hawks nor the Yellowjackets held a lead of more than three points over the opening 10 minutes of the first half of play. A three-pointer from Kellie Cortina with 8:41 remaining in the half gave RMC a 20-16 lead before 'Wick battled back to tie the game at 22-22 on a triple from Foglia four minutes later.
The Jackets got the next six to take their biggest lead of the game, 28-22, with just over two minutes left but four straight points from Dumas trimmed the Jacket edge to two at the break. Dumas would finish the half with 13 points to pace the Hawks.
Dumas knocked down a jumper 11 seconds into the second half to tie the score and Foglia gave 'Wick the lead, 30-28, twenty-six seconds later. After Hannah Livermon converted a layup for RMC with 18:21 to go, two Purcell free throws seconds later put Hartwick in front until the final horn.
Consecutive jumpers from Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) and Dumas would give the Hawks their biggest lead up until that point, 43-33, with 14 minutes left but RMC would slowly chip away at the advantage. Seven straight points would make the score 43-40 before the Hawks called timeout and responded with two straight Foglia buckets to build the edge back up.
Over the next four minutes, the Hawks maintained the lead, which never fell below four points. With the score at 51-47, the Hawks would convert the game's next 11 points in a crucial swing to put the game out of reach for the Jackets. Foglia netted seven points in the run with Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) contributing three. The duo combined for 5-of-6 from the line in the span.
Randolph-Macon was paced on the day by Katie Anderson and Livermon, who each had 11 points. Khajae Hester and Paige Mills each added eight points.
Hartwick made 16-of-20 shots from the free-throw line in the game. It also shot 51.3% (20-of-39) from the field while limiting the Jackets to 29% (16-of-55). The Hawks held the edge on the glass, 34-27.
"I'm very proud of our effort tonight," added West. "We made some big shots when we needed to."
Foglia, who scored 20 second-half points, made 7-of-11 shots from the field and 3-of-4 three-point field goals. She was also 8-for-8 from the line. Dumas also hit seven of her 11 shots and made her only attempt from beyond the three-point arc. Arduini finished with five points and four assists for the Hawks.
