FREDERICK, Md.—The Hood College women's basketball team (3-5) was defeated by Guilford College (8-2) in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. The two sides battled throughout in an entertaining game that saw the Blazers come up just short.

Hood was led by its two senior guards Dyanna Prater and Emily Maerz. Prater scored 18 points on 6-18 shooting to pace the Blazers. Maerz tallied 11 points, nine of which were off shots from three point territory. As a team the Blazers shot just 21-71 for 29.6 percent, while Guilford was not much better, shooting just 31.7 percent on 20-63 shooting. The Quakers were led by Gabby Oglesby, who recorded a double-double with team highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds.

The Blazers started the game out hot with two Maerz three's and another shot from distance by sophomore Briana Lee that gave Hood an early 9-4 advantage. Guilford went on a 10-0 run later in the half to take a six point advantage, until a Prater three ended the run. The teams traded baskets into the half with the Quakers holding a 33-30 advantage.

The intensity picked up in the second half as Oglesby scored eight of the first ten Quaker points to begin the stanza and put Hood in a 43-36 hole. Hood continued to scrap as points became hard to come by for both teams during stretches of the second half. Hood found itself with its largest deficit of the game at 52-42 after a Lila Scott three looked as though it may have deflated the Blazers ambition. This was not to be as Hood's defensive tenacity really picked up in the last seven minutes to give the team a chance.

An Arianna Delerme jumper and two Prater layups brought the game to within four. Sophomore Rachel Wiley then hit a layup with just 1:27 remaining to bring Hood to within two as fans at BB&T Arena were ready for the comeback. The Blazers biggest inadequacy at the end of the game was not being able to get a rebound when they really needed it. The Quakers had missed three straight shots, but were able to get the offensive rebounds and it resulted with an Oglesby three point play with just .33 seconds remaining. The make by Oglesby ended a field goal drought of over seven minutes and put Hood in a two possession hole. The blue and grey were unable to get any closer as Guilford ran out the clock to take the win by six.

The Blazers cannot dwell on this loss long as they get right back at it with a game against Roanoke College tomorrow at BB&T Arena. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
