Lady Choctaws Pull Away for 91-57 Win Over Berry

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team completed a perfect Zaxby's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with a 91-57 victory over Berry College on Saturday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The tournament featured the Lady Choctaws and Lady Vikings, along with Huntingdon College and Howard Payne, who also went 2-0.  All proceeds from the tournament went directly to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).

The Lady Choctaws (2-0) turned a close game into a blowout with a 30-11 run over the final 10:10 of the first half.  The scoring spurt included two 14-2 runs during the span.

In the second half, MC took their largest lead at 82-43 with 5:40 remaining on a pair of free throws by junior Jasmine James.  The Co-Lin transfer tallied a double-double with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Caitlin Brown joined James in double-figures with 13 points, going 6-6 from the floor and pulling down six rebounds.  Seniors Ebony Williams and Traci Rodgers also poured in 10 points each.

As a team, the Lady Choctaws shot 54% (34-63) from the floor, while holding the Lady Vikings to just 36% (20-56).  MC forced 27 turnovers and had 14 steals, led by James with foor.

MC did most of their damage in the paint, scoring 54 points from in close.  The reserves also stepped up with 53 points to just 18 bench points for the Lady Vikings.

Alexa Evans and Chanlir Segarra led Berry with 15 points apiece, while Mel McLean came off the bench to score 10.

The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Rhodes College at 5:30 p.m. in the "Golden Dome".
