Ninth-ranked Washington University Downs Kohawks

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Ninth-ranked Washington University of St. Louis nearly doubled Coe's rebounding total and shot nearly 50 percent from the field, as they downed 21st-ranked Coe College 81-46 Sunday.

The Kohawks played their second game of the weekend without its two leading scorers, senior Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) and junior Mary Halvorson (Waterville, Iowa/Waukon), as they sat out with injuries.  

Washington University scored the first points of the game on a 3-pointer by Maddy Scheppers, but the Kohawks responded with seven-straight points to take a 7-3 lead with 15:01 to play in the first half.  That would be the only lead the Kohawks would hold in the game, as the Bears went on a 13-4 run in the next 6:58 to take a 16-11 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) scored a layup with 6:26 to play in the first half, cutting Washington University's lead to 19-15.  Lucy Montgomery answered for the Bears, as her 3-pointer with 5:57 to play in the opening half started a 17-4 run to close the half, as the Bears took a 36-19 lead into the locker room.

Coe had just two field goals in the first 7:27 of the second half, with the Bears going on a 16-6 run to open the final frame.  The Kohawks answered with a 7-2 run in the next 2:14, but the Bears responded with 12-straight of their own to take a 66-32 lead with 7:09 to play.  A jumper by senior Caitlin Kray (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) with 1:47 to play cut the lead to 74-46, but the Bears scored the final seven points of the game.

Hayes led the Kohawks with 13 points, while junior Mackenzie Reed (Iowa City, Iowa/West) added eight.  JuniorHannah Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), senior Kelsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and Kray had six points apiece.  Hayes led Coe with six boards, while junior Lindsey Buckles (Davenport, Iowa/West) grabbed four.  Hayes led the Kohawks with three assists.  Reed tied a career-high with two blocked shots.

The Bears held a 50-26 advantage on the boards.  Washington University shot 49.2 percent for the game, while Coe shot just 33.9.  The Bears hit 64.3 percent from 3-point range, while Coe was just 4-of-20.

Coe returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Mount Vernon to face Cornell.
