Warhawk Women Roll Past UW-La Crosse

The Warhawks grabbed an early lead that they never relinquished in the game. After scoring the first two buckets in the game UW-W extended its lead to 13-5 at 16:29 on a three pointer by junior guard Mary Merg. La Crosse's senior guard Trisha Van Dusseldorp answered with a layup to cut the lead to six but the Warhawks rattled off the next seven points to take a 13 point lead, 20-7 with 13:24 left in the half. The Eagles would break into a single digit deficit off an freshman center Olivia Nickel jumper at 6:06 to make the score 29-20, but UW-Whitewater surged scoring ten straight points to take a 39-20 lead with 2:48 remaining. The final score of the period was a freshman forward Lisa Palmer jumper at 1:52 giving the Warhawks a 41-23 lead heading into the lockerrooms.

The Warhawks shot 47% from the floor compared to 37% for the Eagles in the first 20 minutes. UW-W forced 14 turnovers while committing just six. Merg led all players in the first half with 11 points. Palmer grabbed four rebounds and added three steals to lead UW-W defensively. Van Dusseldorp led UW-L at halftime with seven points.

The Warhawk lead dipped below 15 points just once in the second half after freshman guard Maggi Bishop's jumper cut the lead to 41-27 at 18:47. Whitewater led by as much as 26 in the game, with Palmer's layup giving UW-W a 76-50 advantage with 4:28 left in the game. The Warhawks would score just one point the rest of the way but held the Eagles to five points bringing the final score to 77-55.

The Warhawks shot 43% (32-74) from the field and held UW-L to 37% (22-60) from the floor. Whitewater held a 48-41 advantage rebounding and posted 12 steals in the game.

The five starters for the Warhawks scored in double digits led by Merg's 15. Palmer added 13 on 6-9 shooting, followed by senior center Courtney Kumerow's 12, junior guard Kaitlyn Thill had 11 and junior guard Katie Burton posted 10. Palmer tied for game high honors with seven rebounds. Three Eagles recorded ten points apiece including Van Dusseldorp, senior guard Briana Radowicz and junior guard Lexi Masiak. Radowicz and Masiak each had seven boards.

UW-Whitewater will return home to host UW-Eau Claire Saturday, December 8 at 5:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
