BOSTON, Mass.—All 12 Beacons scored and UMass Boston (4-0) forced 37 Wheelock College (0-4) turnovers en route to a 79-18 victory Thursday night in their home opener at the renovated Clark Athletic Gymnasium.
Sophomore Brittany Moore (Billerica, Mass.) scored a game-high 12 points and added four rebounds to help the Beacons to the fourth 4-0 start in program. Its the first time UMB has gone 4-0 since the 2001-02 season.
Freshman Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and sophomore Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) each finished with a 11 points for the Beacons.
Freshman Erica McGreevy (Taunton, Mass.) was the final Beacon in double figures with 10 points. After not scoring in her first two collegiate games, McGreevy nailed two first-half 3-pointers and added a basket and two free throws in the second half. For the game, McGreevy finished with seven rebounds, five assists and a game-high eight steals.
Two other Beacons freshman scored their first collegiate points in their first appearance in the UMB Blue and White. Amanda Cavallaro (Seekonk, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two assists in 12 minutes, including a steal and a layup on the first possession of her career. Erin Fennessy (Plainville, Mass.) poured in eight points and three rebounds in 11 minutes, including one of the Beacons five 3-pointers.
Sophomore center Taylor Whyte (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) added five points and five rebounds in 24 minutes, while Lauren Perra (Taunton, Mass.) led the Beacons with six assists.
For Wheelock, freshman Kelsey Becker led the team with seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Senior Randi Davis added five points and a team-high two assists.
The Beacons jumped out to a 20-1 lead just over eight minutes into the game and never looked back. Working against the Wildcats 2-3 zone, UMass Boston bided their time passing the ball around the perimeter, before finding an open forward on the block for an open layup.
UMass Boston held a 48-4 advantage in the paint and scored 24 points off of 20 offensive rebounds.
After playing her starters for the opening few mintues of the second half, Courtney Mattingly gave her young second minute plentiful playing time in their first blowout of the year.
For the game, UMass Boston hit 44.6 percent (33-of-74) of their shots and drained 5-of-15 (33 percent) of their 3-pointers. Wheelock finished at 17.9 percent (7-of-39) from the field, and 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) from beyond the arc.
UMass Boston will get their biggest of the season thus far Saturday when they travel to take on Western Connecticut State University at 1 p.m. in their Little East Conference opener.
